The Ohio Department of Aging, through its STEADY U Ohio falls prevention initiative, challenges you to take 10 BIG Steps to Prevent Falls.
Each day during the week, the department and its falls prevention partners will host a free, web-based learning opportunity on a different aspect of falls prevention. Each learning opportunity will be paired with a personal challenge or other activity to apply the lessons learned to your home, health, and habits. Done together, these learning opportunities and personal activities make up the 10 BIG Steps to Prevent Falls.
The 10 BIG Steps to Prevent Falls:
BIG Steps 1 & 2: Learn about falls risk factors and do a self-assessment
BIG Step 1: Learn about the factors that increase your risk of falling and steps to reduce your risk.
Dr. Shawn Weiss, of Select Home Care, discusses the factors that can put you at higher risk for falls and fall-related injury.
BIG Step 2: Complete a falls risk self-assessment and discuss your results with your health care providers, your family, and friends.
BIG Steps 3 & 4: Learn about exercises to prevent falls and make a personal exercise plan
BIG Step 3: Learn about exercises and other physical activity that can reduce your risk of falling.
Kerry MacQueen, from the Holmes County General Health District, discusses activities that can strengthen muscles, build stamina, and improve balance to lower your risk of falling.
BIG Step 4: Complete a personal physical activity plan and try a new exercise.

BIG Steps 5 & 6: Learn about home fall hazards and complete a home safety checklist
BIG Step 5: Learn how to identify and remove falls risks in and around your home.
Ann Smith, from The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, discusses common falls risks in older adults’ homes and how to remove them, including simple, inexpensive fixes as well as good investments for safety.
BIG Step 6: Complete a home hazard walk-through and checklist.
Steps 7 & 8: Learn how to eat well to prevent falls and make a meal plan
BIG Step 7: Learn how a healthy diet can help lower your risk of falling.
Carmen Clutter, from the Ohio Department of Aging, discusses how a healthy diet can give you the nutrients to maintain strength and balance and prevent falls, and provides resources to help you plan healthy meals.
BIG Step 8: Complete a personal meal plan to prevent falls.
Steps 9 & 10: Learn how to talk with your health care providers about falls and make a medication list
BIG Step 9: Talk to your doctor and other health care providers about falls.
Kristen Sobota and Kelly Kroustos, from Ohio Northern University, provide tips for discussing your falls risk factors and fall history with your health care providers, including doctors and pharmacists.
BIG Step 10: Complete a medication inventory and discuss it with your health care provider or pharmacist.
