Ohio Department of Aging Announces $440,000 in Grants to Increase Access to Healthy, Local Produce for Older Ohioans Bookmark

The Ohio Department of Aging (ODA) today announced it is awarding 11 grants totaling $440,000 to Ohio’s area agencies on aging to build or expand partnerships increasing access to nutritious food for low-income older Ohioans. Three $40,000 grants were awarded today to area agencies serving portions of the Mahoning Valley.

With flu season underway, the Ohio Department of Aging and the Ohio Department of Health urge Ohioans to take steps to avoid getting and spreading the flu. Older adults are at increased risk of complications from the flu. Infections are highly contagious and spread by coughing and contact. By protecting yourself, you are also protecting those around you.

Older adults are at increased risk of complications from medication misuse and abuse. Research has shown that three out of five older adults take their prescriptions improperly. Misuse includes skipping doses, not filling prescriptions, and not following the prescriber's directions. The Ohio Department of Aging and the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services are using National Substance Abuse Awareness Month to alert older Ohioans of the risk and share tips to take, store, and dispose of their medications safely.

The Ohio Department of Aging will hold its fifth-annual “10 Million Steps to Prevent Falls” campaign on National Falls Prevention Awareness Day, Monday, Sept. 23, 2019. The agency is seeking individuals, groups, and organizations to host community walking groups and events on that day and throughout September to raise awareness of older adult falls and the many things older Ohioans can do to prevent them.
