It’s easy, it’s safe, and it’s important

A message from Ursel McElroy, director, Ohio Department of Aging, and Lydia Mihalik, director, Ohio Development Services Agency

The 2020 U.S. Census is underway. The Census helps determine how much federal money will come to Ohio and local communities.

According to AARP, older adults have been historically more likely than other age groups to return their Census forms and make sure they are counted.

And so, Ohio is counting on you!

The Census is easy. In March, you will get a postcard in the mail that will include instructions on how to complete the Census. For the first time, Americans will be asked to complete the Census primarily online, though options still exist to complete the Census over the phone, by mail, or in-person.

The online option is the fastest and easiest way to submit your Census information. Public libraries across the state provide free access to computers and are training staff right now to assist people who are not comfortable with or do not have access to a computer or the Internet.

The Census is safe. The Census will never ask for your social security number or bank account numbers. Your individual information about your household will not be shared – even with other government agencies.

The Census is important. A complete Census means that Ohio will get its fair share of federal tax dollars for our schools, our roads, services for older adults, and much more.

Be counted, Ohio.  It’s safe. It’s easy.  And it’s important.
