Older adults can be at higher risk for death from a home fire due to physical changes and homes that were not designed for their changing needs, among other factors. Oct. 6-12 is National Fire Prevention Week. The Ohio Department of Aging and the State Fire Marshal’s office encourage older Ohioans to create and practice a plan for surviving a fire in their homes.

Since 1976, 486 outstanding older Ohioans have been inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. The Ohio Department of Aging is once again accepting nominations for this statewide prestigious recognition. The hall honors current or long-time Ohio residents age 60 and older who have made and continue to make a lasting impact on their communities, their professions or their vocations.

Take a walk on National Falls Prevention Awareness Day to help stop older adult falls Bookmark

Monday, Sept. 23, 2019, is National Falls Prevention Awareness Day. The Ohio Department of Aging is marking the day with its fifth-annual “10 Million Steps to Prevent Falls.” The campaign, sponsored by the department’s STEADY U Ohio falls prevention initiative, recruits community partners to organize and host walking groups and events. Participants will contribute toward a statewide goal of having at least 4,000 people walk a mile each in the name of falls prevention.

During National Preparedness Month, the Ohio Department of Aging reminds all Ohioans that older adults may have a harder time adjusting during emergencies and extreme conditions than younger people do. This makes it even more important that older Ohioans have a plan for what to do if disaster strikes.

In recognition of Sept. 8-14, 2019 as National Suicide Prevention Week, Ursel J. McElroy, director of the Ohio Department of Aging encourages all Ohioans to connect with older friends and loved ones and become aware of resources that can prevent suicide.
