Ursel J. McElroy, director of the Ohio Department of Aging, addressed the members of the Ohio House Aging and Long-Term Care Committee today. Speaking on the invitation of Committee Chair Ginter, Director McElroy described the current state of older adults in Ohio and the critical issues they face. She also outlined the administration’s priorities for evolving the state’s system of services and supports to fully meet the needs of older Ohioans and their caregivers.

With flu season underway, the Ohio Department of Aging and the Ohio Department of Health urge Ohioans to take steps to avoid getting and spreading the flu. Older adults are at increased risk of complications from the flu. Infections are highly contagious and spread by coughing and contact. By protecting yourself, you are also protecting those around you.

Older adults are at increased risk of complications from medication misuse and abuse. Research has shown that three out of five older adults take their prescriptions improperly. Misuse includes skipping doses, not filling prescriptions, and not following the prescriber's directions. The Ohio Department of Aging and the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services are using National Substance Abuse Awareness Month to alert older Ohioans of the risk and share tips to take, store, and dispose of their medications safely.

The Ohio Department of Aging and the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services encourage all Ohioans to take advantage of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019. Locations around the state will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to accept pills for proper disposal. The service is free and anonymous.

Medicare’s annual Open Enrollment period begins Oct. 15 and ends on Dec 7, 2019. The Ohio Department of Aging and the Ohio Department of Insurance encourage all Ohioans with Medicare to review their coverage options and ensure they are choosing the best plan to meet their needs and their budgets.
