The Golden Buckeye Program

 Making community connections since 1976

Golden Buckeye: Making Community Connections since 1976The Golden Buckeye program has been helping older Ohioans and other eligible adults make community connections for more than four decades. Nearly 2.5 million Ohioans are eligible for the Golden Buckeye card, including all Ohioans age 60 or older, as well as adults age 18-59 who have disabilities as defined by Social Security. The program empowers older Ohioans to become active, loyal customers who seek value and reward quality. It also supports locally owned and operated small businesses, which are vital to the character of each community.

The Golden Buckeye program is a service of the Ohio Department of Aging. For assistance using the card or for referral to local services and supports, please call 1-800-422-1976.

Where to Use Your Card - At its heart, the Golden Buckeye program is a small business program, so you'll have the most luck using your card at locally owned, small businesses and service providers. Some participating merchants display the Golden Buckeye logo on their door, in their window or at the checkout, and some will ask if you have a Golden Buckeye Card. However, the best way to engage and save is to ask anywhere you spend money about a Golden Buckeye or other discount for which you may qualify.

Merchants of all types voluntarily offer special savings or deals for Golden Buckeye cardholders. Types of locally owned businesses and services that may honor the Golden Buckeye Card include:

  • A variety of local businesses and services honor the Golden Buckeye Card.Food, Dining and Entertainment: Bakeries, high school events, grocery stores, museums, specialty markets and restaurants
  • Healthy Lifestyle: Dentists, fitness equipment stores, fitness centers, optometrists and sporting goods stores
  • Home and Auto: Auto services, bike repair shops, hardware stores, home improvement stores, home repairs, maintenance, landscaping and nurseries
  • Lodging: Bed and breakfasts, camping and RV parks and Ohio State Parks
  • Pets: Pet groomers and veterinary clinics
  • Other: Craft and sewing stores, florists, hair styling, resale shops and more!

Below are some examples of the types of businesses that participate in the Golden Buckeye program and the types of savings they offer. Follow our page on Facebook for more business suggestions and tips.

Let your Golden Buckeye Card help with holiday cleaning

Let your Golden Buckeye Card help with holiday cleaningIf you're like most Ohioans, your to-do list grows longer as the holidays grow nearer. It may seem like an endless parade of chores prevents you from focusing on what you value most - time with family, planning get-togethers, sharing memories. From ensuring your "Sunday best" clothing is at its best, or ensuring your table linens and decorations are clean or fresh, your Golden Buckeye Card and your local dry cleaner can shorten your to-do list and save you some money in the process. Here are some examples from around the state, but be sure to ask your community dry cleaner about a Golden Buckeye or senior discount. Remember, you're most likely to find Golden Buckeye discounts at locally-owned small businesses.

The Golden Buckeye CardHow to Get a Card - Ohio residents who hold current Ohio Driver Licenses or State ID cards automatically receive their Golden Buckeye cards in the month of their 60th birthdays. Due to ID, age and disability (when appropriate) verification requirements, you cannot apply for a Golden Buckeye card online or by phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old do I have to be to get a Golden Buckeye Card?

The Golden Buckeye program is open to all Ohio residents age 60 or older.

You may also qualify for a Golden Buckeye Card if you are age 18 to 59 and have a permanent and total disability (as defined by Social Security).

How do I apply for a Golden Buckeye Card?

For most Ohio residents age 60 or older, there is no need to apply. We automatically mail Golden Buckeye Cards to Ohio residents with a current Ohio Driver License or ID card in or before the month of their 60th birthdays.

  • If you have a license or ID card, but do not automatically receive your Golden Buckeye card, it may be because your mailing address on file with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles is incorrect. If that is the case, call toll-free 1-866-301-6446 during normal business hours to provide the correct information and request your card be re-sent.
  • If you do not have a Driver License or state ID card, or if you did not receive your card for unknown reasons, you can apply for a Golden Buckeye card at most senior centers and public libraries. Please call ahead to ensure they have applications on-hand and take with you proof of age and residency.

If you are under age 60 and qualify because of a disability, you will need to apply for a Golden Buckeye Card. You can do so at most senior centers and public libraries. Please call ahead to ensure they have applications on-hand, and take with you proof of age, residency and disability.

Sorry, but we cannot accept applications or requests for Golden Buckeye Cards online.

I did not receive my Golden Buckeye Card when I turned 60. How do I get one?

Call toll-free 1-866-301-6446 during normal business hours to verify your mailing information. You also may apply for a card at most senior centers and public libraries. Please call ahead to ensure they have applications on-hand, and take with you proof of age, residency and disability (if applicable).

What will you accept as proof of disability for a Golden Buckeye Card?

To prove eligibility for a Golden Buckeye Card due to disability, you must provide one of the following documents:

  • a Medicare (not Medicaid) card;
  • SSI or SSDI acceptance documentation; or
  • a copy of a document certifying permanent and total disability issued by any state department, Ohio public employee retirement system (STRS, PERS, etc), or any federal retirement system.

We are unable to accept any other form of proof of disability, such as a letter from your doctor.

I thought the age for a Golden Buckeye Card was 55. When did it change?

In 1976, when the program launched, the minimum age of eligibility for a Golden Buckeye Card was 65. In 1985, the age of eligibility was lowered to 60, where it has remained.

From 1985 to 1988, the Golden Buckeye Card partnered with the Southwestern Bell Silver Saver card, which was available to Ohioans age 55 and older, but the age of eligibility for Golden Buckeye was still 60.

Can I apply for a Golden Buckeye Card online?

No. State law requires the Department of Aging or an approved sign-up site to validate age or disability status to issue a Golden Buckeye Card. This can be done only in person.

You may apply in person at most senior centers and public libraries. Please call ahead to ensure they have applications on-hand, and take with you proof of age, residency and disability (if applicable).

Can you send me a Golden Buckeye Card application?

I applied or called for a new or replacement Golden Buckeye Card but I have not yet received it. What should I do?

You should receive your Golden Buckeye Card in six to eight weeks after your application is received. If you have not received your card in this time period, call toll-free 1-866-301-6446 during normal business hours and ask for the status of your application.

Why did I receive two Golden Buckeye Cards?

Everyone who receives a new or replacement Golden Buckeye Card after January 2015 will receive two copies of their card. Use one card and store one away in case of loss or theft, or keep one in your wallet and one in your car - whatever is most convenient for you. Remember, however, that your Golden Buckeye benefits are not transferrable, and the card may only be used by the person named on it.

Can I let someone else use my Golden Buckeye Card?

No. Only the person whose name is on the card is entitled to the benefits and discounts of the Golden Buckeye Card. Some merchants may ask for another form of identification when you present your card.

Where I can use my Golden Buckeye Card?

Ask anywhere you spend money about a Golden Buckeye discount, senior discount or other discount for which you may qualify (e.g., veterans, disability). The best places to find Golden Buckeye discounts are at locally owned small businesses. Some participating merchants will display the Golden Buckeye Card logo on doors, windows and at the cash register, but most cardholders find savings by asking wherever they shop for a Golden Buckeye or senior discount.

Is there a list of businesses that accept the Golden Buckeye card online?

Due to the large number of participating businesses throughout Ohio, we do not maintain an online list of businesses. We recommend that you ask anywhere you spend money if they honor the Golden Buckeye Card or offer a senior discount (if you qualify). The Golden Buckeye Card is most often honored at locally owned, small businesses and service providers.

We maintain a list of new and recently updated businesses, as well as seasonal lists of spotlighted businesses on our website.

You can find participating pharmacies at the Ohio's Best Rx website.

Older Adults and the Flu

Older Adults and the Flu

Older adults are at increased risk for complications from the flu. Flu is highly contagious and is spread by coughing and contact. Symptoms include fever, cough, aches and tiredness. The best way to avoid getting the flu is by getting a flu shot. Ask about special high-dose vaccines specifically for older adults.
