Ohio Department of Aging Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 1, 2012

Ohio Department of Aging kicks off Older Americans Month and reminds all Ohioans that we are "never too old to..."

Annual observance celebrates ways healthy, active elders contribute to communities

COLUMBUS - The Ohio Department of Aging is celebrating May as Older Americans Month, and Tuesday, May 15, as Senior Citizens Day. The theme for 2012 is "never too old to..." and challenges older adults to spotlight the many varied ways that they share their experience, wisdom and understanding with other generations. The department invites all Ohioans to take part in local celebrations around the state and contribute to a photo project on Facebook.

Never too old to.."Older Ohioans increasingly are seeking out meaningful opportunities to contribute, and as a result, they are remaining respected, vital members of society who continue to grow, thrive and contribute." said Bonnie Kantor-Burman, director of the department. "By participating in social, creative and physical activities, our elders see proven health benefits. When they interact with family, friends and neighbors across generations, they enrich the lives of everyone involved."

The department encourages communities, senior centers, organizations and individuals to host public events to celebrate seniors in their communities. Local events traditionally include health fairs, luncheons, dances, outings, day trips and more. The department's Older Americans Month webpage, lists activities throughout the month from across the state and also provides resources to help organizations and individuals plan and promote events.

Also to celebrate the month, the department is hosting an Older Americans Month photo project on its Facebook page. Ohioans of all ages are encouraged to visit www.facebook.com/OhioDepartmentOfAging and post photos they have taken that embody the theme "never too old to" Submissions will be accepted through May 16. Top photos will be featured on the department's website and may be the subject of an article in the Boomerang electronic newsletter. More information is at the Older Americans Month webpage.
