Each May, Ohio and the nation celebrate Older Americans Month, with Senior Citizens Day falling on the third Tuesday of the month. Ohio's theme for celebrations this year, established by the state Department of Aging, is "Reinvent Yourself, Reinvent Aging," to emphasize how older Ohioans today are shrugging off traditional aging stereotypes and becoming increasingly engaged in their communities through working, volunteering, mentoring and learning.
About Older Americans Month - Older Americans Month was established in 1963 to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country. Every President since Kennedy has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to elders in their communities. The observance is sponsored nationally by the U.S. Administration on Aging and in Ohio by the state Department of Aging (www.aging.ohio.gov).
