Introduction
From the Director:
I am pleased and proud to be a part of the Department of Aging and Ohio’s aging network.
The Department has worked closely with Governor Ted Strickland’s administration to improve quality of life and choice for Ohioans. These goals are reflected in new departmental mission and vision statements, which will guide our statewide efforts as we evolve from an agency that addresses only older Ohioans’ issues to one that reaches out to more vulnerable Ohioans.
The governor has shown his support for older Ohioans in many ways, including the expansion of the PASSPORT Medicaid waiver program and the broadened Homestead Property Tax Exemption.
Gov. Strickland demonstrated a commitment to an improved long-term care system by asking the department to lead a representative workgroup to transform the system into one that will offer all Ohio consumers their choice in long-term care services and supports. He also established the Executive Medicaid Management Administration to more effectively manage the Ohio Medicaid program across state agencies.
In the spirit of cooperation fostered by the new Governor’s administration, the Department of Aging worked closely with other state agencies, such as the Ohio Department of Insurance, the Treasurer of State’s office and the Department of Health in new and enhanced programs and initiatives. On the federal level, the Department has worked with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to bring targeted health care information to Ohio citizens.
The Department of Aging is evolving. Just a few years ago, we focused on services and supports for older Ohioans in their homes. As the needs and preferences of Ohio’s seniors changed, we focused on services and programs that have helped older Ohioans remain healthy and active. Now, as Governor Strickland focuses on improving Ohio’s economic outlook, the Department has identified mature workers and volunteers as valuable resources who make vital contributions to their communities and to Ohio’s economy.
Working together, Ohio’s aging network can build on these accomplishments to help older Ohioans live healthy, active lives and continue to contribute to their communities.
