Text of Governor's Proclamation

State of Ohio
Executive Department - Office of the Governor

IN RECOGNITION OF
OHIO SENIOR CENTER WEEK
APRIL 22-28, 2007

Ohio has a vibrant and rich network of more than 400 full- and part-time senior centers.

These centers offer older Ohioans, including baby boomers, a place to go for social activities, trips, volunteer opportunities, health screenings, health and consumer education, creative arts, exercise, wholesome meals and more.

Senior centers share the state's mission to promote the dignity, self-determination, and well-being of older Ohioans, and they do so in ways that uniquely fill the needs of their communities.

Center locations, staff and programs reflect the diversity of the people they serve, provide focal and gathering points and promote active aging and intergenerational contributions for the betterment of all, not just the frail elderly.

In addition to enriching the lives of individuals, senior centers also play a crucial role in Ohio's social support systems. Senior centers have been the foundation of the state's aging network since the network was first created.

Many multipurpose senior centers work with local partners to provide home and community-based services that allow older adults to live independently in their own homes. These services, which include home delivered meals and transportations services, allow many Ohioans to age in place instead of moving to more expensive and restrictive nursing home care.

All Ohioans can be proud of the work senior centers do in and for their communities. Likewise, centers rely on their communities to be successful and are proud of the support they get from contributors, volunteers, community leaders and others.

FOR ALL OF THESE REASONS, I, TED STRICKLAND, Governor of the State of Ohio, do hereby proclaim APRIL 22 - 28, 2007 as OHIO SENIOR CENTER WEEK

throughout the state of Ohio and urge all Ohioans and communities to visit and support their local senior centers.

On this 22nd day of April, 2007;

Ted Strickland
Governor
