FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 17, 2007
COLUMBUS - Governor Ted Strickland, Barbara E. Riley, Director of the Ohio Department of Aging, and members of the Ohio General Assembly will honor Crissina Gibson, of Sarahsville, and 11 other caregivers for their dedication and compassion at the fourteenth annual Elder Caregiving Awards ceremony at the Statehouse Atrium in Columbus from 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23.
"Family members and informal caregivers truly are the backbone of our long-term care system. Ohio caregivers provide 80 percent of all long-term care services that would otherwise cost Ohio taxpayers more than $10.4 billion each year," said Riley. "Crissina Gibson is the embodiment of the Sandwich Generation, as she cares for both her children and the generation that came before."
Crissina, a married mother of three with two girls at home, is the primary caregiver for her in-laws, Richard, 83, and Mildred, 80, as well as her mother Nadine, 78. Gibson helps everyone with personal care, cooking, laundry and general cleaning. She also manages their personal business, their medications and transports everyone to appointments.
The Elder Caregiving Award symbolically honors the thousands of Ohio caregivers who lovingly take care of family and friends day after day. Although the award is given only to a few caregivers, it heightens public awareness of the contributions of all caregivers.
Bios and photos of the 2007 Elder Caregivers of the Year are on the Department of Aging's Web site. Thirteen individuals will also be inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame at the event.
