Nursing Homes

Nearly 1,000 nursing homes provide care to an estimated 80,000 Ohio residents. Nursing homes serve consumers needing or desiring more medical services than those available through home care, assisted living and other options.

In Ohio, the Department of Health licenses and inspects nursing homes. Also, if the nursing home is certified for Medicare or Medicaid, they must also meet federal certification standards.

Nursing homes do not necessarily mean long-term care. More than half of all nursing home placements are for three months or less. Nursing homes are being increasingly used to complement and supplement other care options, including Hospital care.

Costs for nursing home care vary according to the location of the facility and services offered. Statewide, the average cost is about $4,600 per month.

Deciding to move into a nursing home can be a difficult and emotional decision. Equally difficult is choosing a facility. Any Ohioan wishing to enter a nursing home must participate in a Pre-admission Review, conducted by skilled staff at your Area Agency on Aging. The reviewer can help you determine if nursing home placement is for you, explain your options and help you choose a facility, if appropriate.

The Ohio Long-term Care Consumer Guide, a service of the Department of Aging, can also help. This interactive resource allows you to compare nursing facilities side-by-side, review regulatory data, and receive helpful tips on selecting a nursing home. For information on nursing homes outside of Ohio, try Nursing Home Compare, a tool from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
