Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people age 65 and over (and certain disabled individuals under age 65). If you are eligible for Social Security benefits (including disability benefits), you may apply for Medicare. There are three basic parts to Medicare: hospital insurance, medical insurance and prescription drug insurance.
Hospital insurance, also called Medicare Part A, covers hospitalization, hospice care, some skilled nursing care and some home health care. Part A also helps pay for durable medical equipment, such as a hospital bed or wheelchair. For more information about Medicare Part A, call toll-free 1-877-602-2430.
Medical insurance, also called Medicare Part B covers some of the cost of necessary medical services and equipment, including doctors’ fees; physical, occupational, and speech therapies; durable medical equipment, X-rays and lab tests. For more information about Part B, call toll-free 1-800-282-0530.
Prescription drug insurance, also called Medicare Part D, helps consumers pay for prescription medications. A variety of plans are available to suit the consumer's needs and preferences. Consumers pay a monthly premium, then a low co-payment for each prescription filled (a deductible may apply). Click here for more information about Medicare prescription drug coverage.
Consumers may also join a Medicare Advantage plan, a health maintenance organization (HMO), which combines and expands on Medicare services.
