Adult Day Services

Adult day services complement home and community long-term services and supports and provides another alternative to institutional care and rehabilitation. Adult day services provide respite to family caregivers as well as provide therapeutic care for cognitive and physically impaired older adults.

These structured, comprehensive programs provide a variety of health, social, and other related support services in a protective setting during any part of a day, but less than 24-hour care. Adult day centers generally operate programs during normal business hours five days a week. Some programs offer services in the evenings and on weekends.

Adult day services can be church sponsored, community-based or for-profit businesses. Centers generally operate programs during normal business hours five days a week, though some offer services in the evenings and on weekends. Costs vary based on the location of the center and the services it provides.

Skilled staff at your Area Agency on Aging can answer your questions about adult day services and help you find a center where you live. The National Adult Day Services Association provides an online guide to selecting quality providers.
