Our Partners: Ohio Senior Center Week

Obetz Senior CitizensOhio's network of more than 400 full- and part-time senior centers share the state's mission to promote the dignity, self-determination and well-being of older Ohioans. Ohio Senior Center Week, May 11-17, is a time to recognize the work that senior centers, their staff and volunteers do to enrich lives and strengthen communities. It is also a time for Seniors to host events to celebrate their members.

The state's senior centers offer older Ohioans, now including baby boomers, a place to go for social activities, educational programs, trips, volunteer opportunities, exercise, wholesome meals and more. In many areas, centers also act as community focal points, creating unique intergenerational activities. Senior centers are changing, just as Ohio's seniors' wants and needs are changing.

Senior centers are inextricably linked to their communities and play a crucial role in Ohio's social services system. Many multipurpose senior centers work with local partners to provide home- and community-based services that allow many Ohioans to age in place instead of moving to more expensive and restrictive institutional care. These services, which include home-delivered meals and transportation services, allow older adults to remain independent in their own homes.

Sycamore Senior Center, Blue AshSenior Center Week 2008 falls during Older Americans Month, a national observance held each May. Most Ohio senior centers will organize special events, such as dinners, health and fitness expos, senior proms and ice cream socials, to celebrate seniors throughout the month. Visit www.goldenbuckeye.com/oam/ for information about events in your area.

Senior Center Week is a time for all Ohioans to learn more about their local senior centers, find out what is available there and ask how they can become involved or help. For all the support and services they provide, senior centers rely, in large part, on the support of contributors, volunteers, voters, community leaders and others for their continued success.

Visit the Ohio Department of Aging Web site www.goldenbuckeye.com/about/seniorcenters.html for an interactive list of senior centers throughout the state.
